After: The Pine Grove

Everywhere that you see brown dirt and leaves was covered in brush, branches and trees last June. While Alannah was in Michigan for a month, we cleared every tree that was less than 6 inches in diameter (they were mostly dead from lack of sun and the choking of thorns and Oriental Bittersweet) and hauled away the brush. We also cut down all of the low-hanging branches. Most of these were dead, and we did it for safety as well as looks. Who wants to lose an eye while riding on the lawn mower or playing tag? No one!

This year we started on March 31 and burned the brush in 5 days, for about 6 hours each time. Michael used the chain saw and I used the pole chain saw. It's now April 25, burn season is done and we both have poison ivy. This is merely one part of our huge yard. I have more pictures to post of the back yard where we now have a lovely outdoor living room.

It's been a long spring full of hard work, but the results are worth it. The mosquito population dropped drastically, the remaining trees are healthy and free from the choke-hold of the Oriental Bittersweet, and it was a great effort between Michael and I.

We have our huge to-do list for starting our vegetable and fruit gardens, and I'll be posting our progress on those as we head into May.
